This story takes place in Germany, where a woman named Allina is taken to work as an aide at a reproductive facility. There, she learns that the children are not treated equally due to the specific racial preference they seek. She meets a Lieutenant named Karl and learns that he wants to save the unwanted children. They plan an escape together; however, Karl is relocated, leaving Allina to follow through with the escape on her own.

What a tense story! Allina and Karl were heroic. They knew the dangers they were putting themselves in and still fought for what they believed. This story takes a different angle where the story is about Germans who didnโ€™t agree with what the Reich wanted. However, thereโ€™s a twist. Both Allina and Karl were not fully Germans and had to forge their documents in order to survive and have access to personal files.

I enjoyed this story. It was well written and researched.

Who should read this book: Anyone who enjoys stories set during WW2 with some romance and strong plot.

  1. Thank you for such a thoughtful and heartfelt review. The Sunflower House sounds like a powerful and emotional readโ€”your reflections really brought the story to life. I appreciate how you highlighted both the historical importance and the emotional depth of Allina’s journey, especially her courage and compassion amid such devastating circumstances. Your insights into the lesser-known horrors of the Lebensborn Program were especially eye-opening, and I agree that historical fiction like this plays a crucial role in keeping these stories remembered. Even your note about wanting more closure on certain plot points shows how invested you were. Iโ€™m definitely adding this to my reading list. Thanks again for sharing such a compelling review!
