Summary:
This illustrated children’s book is about a girl named Zoe who is homeschooled and loves to daydream. Her parents noticed that she was lonely and surprised her by taking her to a shelter, where she fell in love with an older dog she named Hope. She brought Hope home, and things didn’t start out very well, but Zoe was determined and found a way to make Hope feel at home.
My Thoughts:
What a lovely story of hope and determination! I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. I loved how Zoe lit up when she saw Hope for the first time. She is such an old soul at such a young age. Her parents were thoughtful to take her to the shelter after noticing she didn’t go out to play with the other kids. Just seeing Zoe watch them from her window without wanting to join speaks so clearly that she prefers something quieter and closer. Hope was the perfect companion.
What I appreciated about Amie White’s storytelling is that she doesn’t over-explain Zoe’s loneliness. She trusts young readers to feel it through simple but clear wording. The bond between Zoe and Hope is also built slowly rather than rushed. This makes the friendship feel earned. Olena Oprich’s illustrations do real work alongside the text. The bright colors are fun to look at, and the facial expressions on both Zoe and Hope carry as much emotion as the words do. Together, the writing and the art create a warm and positive message.
Recommended for:
· Readers who enjoy gentle stories about loneliness: If you’re drawn to quiet books that take a child’s loneliness seriously without making it heavy, this one lands beautifully.
· Families considering shelter adoption: It’s a lovely pick for families thinking about bringing home an older shelter dog, especially one who needs a little patience to settle in.
· Quieter children and the adults who love them: If you have a child who prefers something calmer and closer to home, they’ll see themselves in Zoe.
