Gouache Painting: Birds

Daily writing prompt
What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

I’ve been obsessed with painting in gouache, and lately, it’s been of birds on a wire/on telephone poles (and also cute robots!). For me, gouache is one of those paints where it looks messy at first and makes me want to quit, but I know that it’ll get better, so I keep going and eventually, it turns out fine. I’ve quit before and have thrown a few beginning pieces in the trash because I freaked out too soon.

Earlier in the year, I signed up for a few gouache classes on Domestika, but haven’t made time to actually sit down and follow through. I’ve been reading and reviewing books mostly, and writing, and have put painting on the back burner. It’s only when I want to paint something as a gift or a birthday card that I’ll get out the gouache.

Here are the paintings of birds on poles I’ve done within the last months:

I’ve noticed that my gouache painting skills have gotten better, and that it gets better the more I paint in gouache. If I could get really good at gouache, I’d be so happy. My ultimate goal is to paint dystopian and futuristic landscapes.
