My high schooler recommended this book to me because she really enjoyed it and thought I would like it as well. This is a story about a murder case that took a while to follow-up on. A family was murdered in a quiet town, and no one knows who did it. The family was a good, hardworking family so it was unusual for them to be murdered. Their killings were gruesome and coldhearted. Eventually, the killers were found. However, we get a glimpse into the background of the killers to gain some form of sympathy for them in hopes that maybe they wouldn’t get the death penalty.

This book was well written. The setting really made feel as though this was a town of ordinary people who simply went along with their daily lives. People were close to each other so there weren’t strangers who didn’t fit in. I personally didn’t sympathize with the killers. I know their story was sad, but taking innocent people’s lives, especially after torturing them doesn’t make up for hearing their sad stories. They deserved their outcome.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was, again, a really sad and gruesome story. The pacing was on-point, and the tension was well done.

Who should read this book: Anyone into murder mystery will definitely enjoy this one.

  1. For me it was originally Dead Man Walking and The Chamber that made me most seriously take to heart the moral dilemmas for capital punishment. Some criminals are undoubtedly just plain evil. Yet it makes great drama when we can somehow still see criminals in a more humanizing light.

I haven’t read the book. But the films In Cold Blood and Capote gave me great appreciation for the bravery it takes for storytellers to express these issues. Thank you for your book review.
