In this novel, a young boy named Eldric Thornshade is the chosen one and must stop evil from corrupting their world.

This story is a classic high fantasy with seekers, wizards, and powerful beings who try stop the forces of good from succeeding. Eldric is hesitant at first. He knew from a young age that he was different. His parents knew it too, but his father, being the protector of his family, chose not to tell Eldric what he was or what he was capable of. Eldric had dreams and visitations from a seeker informing him of the journey he would have to make to join a group of others to defeat the evil forces. Being so young, Eldric ignored the signs. He was too afraid to decide until the decision was made for him.

There’s a lot to take in from this story. There’s Eldric’s story, and then there are quite a few other characters who also seem to have main roles. The prologue opens with a man named Kael, who becomes part of the evil forces. However, we are led to believe that he was once good and chose to turn toward evil. I think a lot can be said here about humanity and the choices we make based on the things we can’t control.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The variety of characters made the story well-rounded. The writing is beautiful—very poetic. While this style was wonderful, it sometimes made it difficult to fully understand what was happening. I found myself guessing each character’s purpose as well as what the ultimate goal was.

Who should read this book: If you’re a high fantasy fan and enjoy poetic-like writing, this one is excellent.
