We Were Once Kings

Daily writing prompt
What are you most proud of in your life?

Growing up in the ‘90s as a teenager and young adult, I felt like our generation was destined to make the world a better place through our knowledge and use of technology. It was going to be a world where we could connect with people from all different places, learn about new cultures, and respect one another’s thoughts and ideas.

The ‘90s felt happy and genuine. This technological world we were heading toward was full of possibilities.

If I had to name one thing I’m most proud of, it would be the advancement of technology. That came through. We are connected.

However, the sad truth is that it’s not quite the dream I imagined. Somewhere along the way, the spirit of curiosity and connection shifted. Everyone wants to be right, and few want to listen. The technology is just there, humming in the background to its own tune—faster than any of us can follow. Before we know it, we’ll be many years older, and too old or too slow to keep up with the newest innovations.

As I reflect on the ‘90’s and early 2Ks, I remember the excitement of learning about computers and technology and feeling like I was riding the wave of a new era. Now, some twenty years later, it has become something ordinary—less thrilling, and at times, a little frustrating to keep up with.

This song, “We Were Once Kings” by Chicane speaks volumes on this feeling I’m going through. I’m not as old as the people in the video, but as a person who grew up listening to new wave, techno, trance, and the variety of EDM music out there, it touched a spot. Time is slipping away.
