This story is about a scientist named Samantha who is preparing plant species in preparation for an apocalypse. While she’s working away, she’s remembering trivial things from her life. These thoughts consume her as she decides on what memorabilia to bring along.

I’m bummed to say I didn’t enjoy this story. One of my favorite books by Roth was the Divergent Trilogy, however, this short story was lacking in everything. There was no depth to the main character, no in-depth details as to the technology, no real reasoning behind what the character was doing with the plants. The character’s memories of “things” wasn’t even done well. I think the intention was to create nostalgia for leaving a wonderful life behind and facing the fear and excitement of going elsewhere and deciding on what meant more, but it didn’t come out that way. The premise was promising, but the execution was a mess. I felt like I was reading a chapter from a novel—one that I could skip and still wouldn’t miss the plot. I don’t mean to sound harsh. I’m just disappointed.

Who should read this book: Anyone who wants a taste of a pre-apocalyptic situation.

If you enjoyed it, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
