This book continues with the Lightbender wandering the land and finding his way to Dorsfield where he rooms with an old acquaintance. The Lightbender seems to be looking for some truth and made his decision to stay until he could find peace within himself. The acquaintance has a niece who lived with him and warned the Lightbender about her beauty. The Lightbender did find her attractive and she found him attractive as well. They became friends, one with benefits, but one that eventually hurt the niece. She was strong-willed though and learned to keep her distance from him. The Lightbender also had a woman friend nearby whom he was also sleeping with, without the niece knowing, and he had no intentions of remedying the situation, or at least telling the niece that he was a womanizer. The Lightbender eventually used his skills to heal the king and learned, from the king, that everyone was still healing from the devastation of the war.
What I enjoyed about the story was the beautiful writing. I liked the relationship between the Lightbender and the niece. The romance was well described and depicted a true, real-life relationship. I also liked how the Lightbender wasn’t perfect. He came across cocky at times with how sneaky he was without trying too hard. What frustrated me a little was that I was expecting some action or military meetings about the damages done to the city, etc. I was looking forward to the aftermath of what war does, but there was none of that. It was a calm read.
Who should read this book: I’d say this book reads more like a women’s fiction than anything else, so I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys that genre. However, it’s written about a man’s path, so that might make it a little confusing for those who understand how women’s prose works.
