In this story, Lt. James Van Wert and his crew are traveling between planets and scanning the area for a mysterious ship that should have been where they had expected it to be. To their surprise, they located a dockyard tug instead. Confused, the crew thinks someone is messing with them and continue to analyze the situation. Not getting the answers they need, Lt. Van Wert brings on Lt. Westly Richards to help with the investigation. Lt. Richards briefs them on the situation, stating that important components were stolen a few years ago. This leads them to backtrack the purchase orders and to figure out how they were able to steal the components without getting caught. Later, one of the crew members learns of a secretive operation. While digging into the situation, they find out that a couple of spies were caught at a scientific facility stealing the components and causing significant damage that it warranted tracking down what the spies had seized. This prompts the lieutenant’s team to alter their plans and focus on tracking down the missing materials and identifying any additional accomplices involved.
Overall, this was an excellent read. I enjoyed the buildup, the tension, and the backstory to Lt. Van Wert and the other characters. The subtle hint of intimacy added a nice touch. The hard science remains the central focus of the story.
Who should read this book: A great read for anyone who enjoys a well-written sci-fi space opera having to do with detective work.
