“The House of BOP: A Seattle BOP Mystery” (Book 4) by Reb MacRath is a standalone story following a detective named Chief Armstrong and his crew as they set out to help a cab driver find the mysterious person who nearly destroyed his (cab driver) life. A lot happens in the story leading up to the final situation which takes place on a train. One thing leads to another and eventually, the mystery man is revealed.
There are quite a few characters in this story and their stories are brief but informative. The main focus was on the cab driver but the brief stories on the other characters created a well-rounded story with characters that had depth. The dark humor was excellent. I liked the atmosphere it created. It was dark, gritty, and gruesome with tension along with your regular detective feel. The plot and characters remained consistent. I also found the references to famous people, tv shows, etc. quite interesting and well done.
This was my first hard-boiled detective read and I really enjoyed it. It was fast paced with a lot of stuff going on and with lots of information. The detective work was nicely done. The language, world building/setting, and characters were all excellent. The writing style really fits this type of storytelling and made it fun to read. Even though I didn’t read the first few books, I still got a great story out of this. I liked the idea of each chapter being episodes. It felt like I was watching an episodic tv show.
Who should read this book: Anyone into noir fiction and detective stories.
