This book follows Sargeant Paxton Ares on his deployment to take down an enemy. His mind is often preoccupied with his pregnant girlfriend and him becoming a father. It’s something he’s nervous about but excited about at the same time. The story revolves around Paxton’s military life and really takes into consideration the struggle between working and leaving family behind.

The plot of the story was intriguing. The military was fighting something but it’s not an enemy on earth or an alien race. They are fighting themselves from a different time period. It’s so well done that it’s believable. The military background and military language are all top-notch. The combination of family life, work life, and military life was done exceptionally well.

I found the story suspensible and well-written. There were moments when the story dragged but overall, I enjoyed it. I also found some character development lacking, but Paxton’s story was interesting and kept me interested. Rarely do I read books where the main character is older and married or in a long-lasting relationship so that was refreshing. I also enjoyed the action and the premise. This is a great read to escape the reality of our world.

Who should read this book: If you’re into exceptional military story sci-fi, this is one of the best.
