Blue Angels Over Grand Junction

I’d love to tell you all about the drive out to Grand Junction, but I slept through most of it. I woke up just long enough to catch the aspens turning on the mountainsides, gold against all that dark green, and then I fell asleep again.

The air show ran two days, Saturday and Sunday, with the Blue Angels flying both. We went on Saturday. The morning was quiet. You had to reserve parking ahead of time in one of the lots set aside outside the show, and school buses shuttled everyone over to the Grand Junction airport. The show was held right at the airport, so it shared the runway with regular commercial flights, which I thought was kind of wild.

We ended up with a pretty good spot, and with the Book Cliffs behind the jets on the tarmac, it was hard to take a bad picture.

The show opened with the national anthem, and while it played, the Navy parachute team floated down with the flags.

There were other acts throughout the day, but the Blue Angels closed out the show, and they were amazing. I know, I say that about everything. But they were so tight and so fast. They flew close enough together that it didn’t seem possible, then pulled apart and came back together like it was nothing.

If you ever get the chance to see them, I’d highly recommend it.
