Wish we would get more rainfalls in this part of the state. It’s been so dry. It snowed a couple of days ago but melted way too quickly. I’m happy to see signs of spring popping up slowly around here though. Just a tiny bit of green makes me smile. Here’s what I found in our front yard this afternoon.
As you can see, more tulips decided they wanted to see the sun. I hope more decide to join them.
Kylie loves the spring air and came out with me to frolic while I took photos and waited for husband to return from Lowe’s with fertilizer for the grass.
While husband fertilized the grass, the girls and I planted some Dutch irises and daffodils that we weren’t able to get to last fall. We put them into pots instead of the yard. I’m sure it’s too late to try to have them grow but we’re trying anyway. The little green parts had already begun to grow from their buds.
Update on Orchids
The white orchid has accomplished its goal with all ten of its buds bloomed.
This last photo of the white orchid was taken last week when the last bud was just getting ready to bloom.
The spotted pink orchid looks like it has finished blooming too but I’m not quite sure because a few of the buds have not completely opened to their fullest. Every time I look at this orchid I can’t help but laugh at how unshapely it is. It is completely deformed and got this way because a budding branch had grown where a tiny clip was holding the stem to the bamboo stick and caused the branch to twist around the clip. I removed the clip, placing it lower on the stem, but it was already too late.
I talked about a sideways orchid flower that I would post a photo of but as I waited more appeared. Here’s what it looks like:
See that orchid at the very top? Doesn’t she look like a snake head? Here’s another one.
The other white orchid, I’ll call her W, is slowly growing buds. I talked about W on this post(at bottom). I’ll need to re-pot her soon.

i haven’t visited your site in a long while! you’ve done A LOT since my last venture here. i love all of your pictures and the stories that associated with them. thanks for sharing pieces of you.
how’d you keep or better yet, get your orchids to re-bloomed? i have a few, but toss them all out cause the stalk is all brown and dead (i think it’s dead). i saved 3 of them, one still has a green stalk so i’m hoping and praying it will still bloom again; the other two the stalk is brown and dead, but the leave is still green so i’m thinking bout tossing those out too. do you repot yours? if yes, do you just use potting soil, or is there a special soil for orchids? is there a fertilizers i should be using for orchids only? how often do you water yours, cause if i recall it says not to water it often, and to keep it in light area, but not direct sunlight? how long until yours re-bloomed again? any tips you can share to help me revive my orchids? sorry so many questions.

About the orchids, normally, when a stalk is dead it just means new stalks will grow. I usually just clip the brown dead ones and await new ones. As for re-potting, the white one with all the blooms was just re-potted last year so there’s a year left before I’ll need to re-pot again. I read that these types of orchids (moth orchids) should be re-potted about every 2 years. I don’t use regular soils on the orchids. I use orchid potting barks/wood chips. I get mine at Lowe’s or Home Depot. As for fertilizer, I normally don’t fertilize. I think my husband may have used regular fertilizer on them once but I can’t remember. Mine tend to bloom year round if they get sufficient sunlight and care. They go through cycles of blooming though and don’t stay bloomed all the time. The flowers will fall off and then a branch will either grow on the same stalk or a new stalk will grow. I have over watered before and killed one of my favorite orchid so I try not to water too often. Once a week or a week and a half…sometimes, I’ve even watered at 2 weeks.
Also, I’m not sure what kind of orchids you have but different species require different care as well. You might have to do additional research if you have a different kind other than the moth ones.

thanks for the helpful tips! my orchids are the same as yours. i’ve read up on what to do to get them to re-bloom; i think i’m just anxious cause it’s been almost 8 months now. i’ve moved the good one to a more lighted area, and water it once a week. i wasn’t sure if i should cut the stalk or not so i didn’t cut it. as for the ones that are dead, i decided to cut the stalk and see if a new one will grow; if not, i’ll just toss them out and get new ones.

You’re welcome. When I got my first moth orchid I didn’t know that I didn’t have to cut the stem so I cut it. Then I found out through a friend that I wasn’t supposed to cut them but I saved mine anyway and a new stem grew. The white one with the huge blooms originally had a dying stem so I cut it off and after a year, and a repot, a new stem grew (and really fast too). So, don’t throw them out.
